Situated on the Delhi-Ambala railway line at a distance of about 50 Km from Delhi, Sonipat town is the headquarters of the Sonipat district and tahsil of the same name. The district of Sonipat in Haryana lies between 28° 48'30" and 29° 17'54" North Latitude and 76°.28'30" and 77°-13'40" East Longitude. On its north lies Panipat district. To its south-west and south are the districts of Rohtak and Delhi respectively. The Yamuna River makes the eastern boundary of the Sonipat district and across the river lies Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh.
Sonipat, situated in the south-eastern part of Haryana, came into existence in the year 1972. Formerly Sonipat was a part of Rohtak district. The number of sub-divisions of Sonipat is three, namely Sonipat, Ganaur and Gohana. Among these all Sonipat is the largest Tehsil, and acts as the district headquarters.
